Studio One Eighty Nine
Studio One Eighty Nine’s artisan-produced collection is one of the most exceptional collections of ethical fashion I have seen. As an added bonus for all you fashion girls browsing at Opening Ceremony, this collection is now available for you to purchase with purpose.
Studio One Eighty Nine was started by two best friends, actress Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah a former communications and marketing director of Bottega Veneta. In 2011, the two women had a life changing experience after a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo for the opening of the City of Joy. City of Joy is a center for women to heal who have suffered sexual abuse and was founded by Tony award winning writer Eve Ensler. The center was created by the women who would use it. This communal spirit made an unforgettable impression on the native New Yorkers. It influenced the two friends to want to make their own positive impact.
Their collection is filled with vibrant colors, luxurious locally sourced fabrics and sophisticated designs. The handcrafted fashions create economic opportunities from sustainable goods. Studio One Eighty Nine’s mission is “to use Fashion as an agent for Social Change, turning challenges on the ground into opportunities.” I cannot wait to see what these two inspiring women do next.
