Boy Meets Girl By Stacy Igel
Lorelai Gilmore of "Gilmore Girls” was strutting through Stars Hollow sporting a grey t-shirt; printed on the shirt, boy and girl silhouettes facing each other. My immediate reaction was, “I want that.” It was modern and fun, with the Boy Meets Girl® iconic image. Since their feature on “Gilmore Girls", Boy Meets Girl® has become an international brand. They draw inspiration from experiences and connections no matter how small or fleeting. Boy Meets Girl® has been featured in every major fashion magazine and supported by numerous celebrities such as Rosario Dawson, Brittany Snow and Mindy Kaling.
Throughout all of their success, the founder, Stacy Igel, has not lost sight of the importance of giving back to others. Stacy says, “Giving back to the community is something very important to me and the ethos of Boy Meets Girl®. To me, the growth of the brand and continuous involvement with charities go hand-in-hand.”
Just as the Boy Meets Girl® design appeals to many types of women, Stacy Igel has been a long-time supporter of several diverse causes from education, to breast cancer awareness to anti-bullying. As part of her support for charities, Boy Meets Girl® has raised over $25,000 for the Young Survival Coalition, an organization that benefits young breast cancer survivors and patients. For the National School Climate Center’s Bully Bust campaign, Stacy created a Boy Meets Girl® t-shirt, sold exclusively at Bloomingdale’s to raise money for the anti-bullying movement. In October 2013, in honor of bullying-prevention month, Boy Meets Girl® gave 20% of its sales of the classic grey and black “Coco” hoodie to the NSCC Bully Bust campaign.
What makes Boy Meets Girl® so unique from other designers is not only have they supported worthy causes but they have also created their own initiative titled, “Boy Meets Girl University.” “Boy Meets Girl University is a hands-on learning experience for students who aspire to work in the fashion industry and want to learn about the creative business side of building a brand.” Stacy wants “to encourage other students to follow their dreams the same way [she] did. It’s important for students (and everyone) to know that by working hard, they can achieve their goals.” Stacy’s lessons are ones I wished I had the opportunity to learn before I ventured into the fashion industry. Boy Meets Girl® University gives these students unfeatured access to resources usually only available to insiders in the industry. To me, Stacy’s lessons are as vital as any class at a university. Stacy says,“It was important to me to be able to create a positive and educational experience for students who might otherwise not have the resources to break into the fashion world on their own.”
Stacy Igel’s multifaceted giving is extraordinary in every sense of the word. She gives back as she educates. She is such a positive force in the fashion world. I admire Stacy immensely; not only has she created an iconic brand but throughout her success, she always stays true to giving back to others. It is a path I hope to continue to emulate with my career.
